About the Blocking Hunger Foundation:
The Blocking Hunger Foundation was founded in 2013 by former Dallas Cowboy Center, Travis Frderick, after Travis volunteered with an organization distributing meals and was struck by the number of children in line. After that, he knew he wanted to make a difference in the Dallas-Fort Worth community by addressing childhood hunger.
The Blocking Hunger Foundation provides support for inner-city and low-income children throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex who struggle with hunger. When a child is hungry, a child can’t reach their full potential in school and beyond. The Blocking Hunger Foundation provides meals to ensure students have the opportunity to thrive and flourish. The foundation serves children through two programs, the Nourish2Flourish program and Travis’ Pantries.
The Nourish2Flourish program provides backpacks full of nutritious meals to children when they are facing extended breaks from school and lose access to the free and reduced lunch programs they depend on.
Currently, there are four Travis’ Pantries located in elementary schools across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Each day, children can come and shop in the pantry for meals to bring home for dinner or over the weekend to ensure they arrive at school full. The four Travis’ Pantries are located in Huffman Elementary, Trinity Basin, Weiss Elementary and Dr. Linda Henrie Elementary.
Nine out of 10 children in inner-city Dallas face food insecurity.
Blocking Hunger Foundation + Ignite MindShift:
The Blocking Hunger Foundation is partnering with Ignite MindShift to provide more meals to students facing food insecurity. The Blocking Hunger Foundation’s Nourish2Flourish program will provide backpacks to students facing hunger at North Dallas High School and David W Carter High School.
Ignite MindShift is an educational nonprofit that partners with schools and organizations to provide life skills training to students. By partnering with the Blocking Hunger Foundation, Ignite MindShift and the Blocking Hunger Foundation can address the student as a whole and provide nutritious meals to ensure they can focus on their school and training from Ignite MindShift.
On May 16, the Blocking Hunger Foundation’s Nourish2Flourish program will deliver backpacks full of meals to students benefiting from Ignite MindShift’s programs in North Dallas and David W Carter High Schools. These meals will help provide meals to students facing food insecurity ahead of summer break.
